About Us

Universal Comedy is a social enterprise offering both charitable and business services.

It was established in 2004 by Patsy Morrison following a lengthy stay in hospital. She realised that having a laugh helped her feel better even in hospital and wanted to share the positive effect of comedy with others with long term ill health. She had also identified a lack of flexible training opportunities for people with health problems and set up the charity Universal Comedy to address this gap.

The Charity

Our charity services provide comedy as an educational tool to improve the lives of young people and adults with long term ill health

The Business

Our business services aim to improve staff morale and outlook as well as improve communication skills through our teambuilding comedy workshops. We also provide a unique and refreshing entertainment service for conferences, events and special occasions.

We are an ethical company with any profits from our business services going to support our charity work.

Charity Services

We provide a flexible and sensitive personal development training programme based on the art form of comedy for people with long term ill health. We teach people skills in producing and performing comedy to develop core skills, confidence and self-esteem, as well as promoting their health and wellbeing. Our training methodology can literally change the lives of people with ill health for the better, and participants can self-refer to our FREE workshops.

Introductory taster session giving participants a flavour of what to expect, showing them how to ‘look for the comedy’ in everyday situations.

8 week comedy courses tutored by a professional comedian in groups of 10 – 12. Participants learn to create, develop and produce their own comedy.

‘Graduates’ from our courses perform at shows at Glasgow International Comedy Festival and Edinburgh Fringe as well as local Mental Health Arts and Film Festivals throughout the year.

• Building friendships and support • Reduced isolation • Higher life aspirations • Improved confidence and self esteem • Increased motivation • Regained sense of self and identity • Encouragement into learning, employment and self-employment • Providing structure and purpose • Challenging mental health stigma and discrimination through Showcase events • Developing new skills both artistic and social • Increased resilience to setbacks • Reduced use of traditional statutory support services

Partnership Working

We have a long track record of partnership working with a range of organisations across Scotland.

Our tailor-made comedy courses are designed to enable participants to fully engage with the comedy process to gain the maximum benefit from the training and improve their quality of life.

Partnership comedy courses can be anything from a few weeks to several months, and often are progressive with a second or third course following on from the initial training. This enables orgaisations to build on the learning and development experienced by their service users.

What our clients say

I have been amazed at the result and feedback I have received for my clients who have been able to take part, the increase in confidence and self-esteem of people who were previously socially isolated has been very positive.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde
Course graduates talked about the significant impact the experiences have had for them. Everybody reported an improvement in their confidence, self-esteem and general mental well being. People also valued the friendships that they had made.
Lanarkshire Association for Mental Health
I can thoroughly commend Universal Comedy. Their work here has greatly benefited marginalised people. The young people felt that participation in the project helped promote their confidence and independence and transition to adult life.
North Lanarkshire Social Work Dept

Thank you so much for the course and ‘clinic’ show. It’s hard to find words that capture how much I believe I have benefited.
Workshop Participant
Having the motivation and having to put some work into it, I get more out of it. I get more reward, I’ve got happier, you know, and my depression has kind of left me now.
