Year One 2017-18
Year 1 and 2 Maths Workshop for parents on Monday 20th November 2017
**************************************************************
Dear Parents,
English
Please continue to support your child with their reading at home. Children need to have their reading diary signed every time they read with you at home so that they can collect ticks and work towards a prize. Please also use Reading Eggs to help your child with their phonics.
As part of our learning about Cinderella, we will be visiting Aston Hall early this half term. We will also be reading stories written by Jill Murphy, including Peace at Last. Children will continue to use phonics to write sentences and practise their handwriting daily.
Maths
This half term, we will be counting, reading, writing, identifying, doubling and halving and using comparative language with numbers up to 20. We’ll also be adding and subtracting up to 20 and solving simple word problems.
Furthermore, we’ll be learning to recognise common 2d and 3d shapes, describe position, direction and movement.
Science
Our topic this half term is materials and we will be investigating what objects are made from and the properties of different materials. Can you spot objects made from wood, plastic, metal or fabric in your home?
Topic
We are continuing to learn about our local environment and will be taking a walk around Moseley to look at the shops and the different houses. We will also be learning to weave and will be creating small pieces of art by weaving with wool and other materials.
RE
During these lessons we will be learning about the importance of listening to others. We will also be exploring what makes us happy. We will also be learning about the story of Christmas.
Regards.

Dear Parents,
English
We will be reading traditional tales including Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Gingerbread Man. It would be helpful for your child to regularly visit the library and share books.
Maths
We will be continuing to improve our counting skills by practising to count forwards and backwards to 100. We will be practising to write our numbers as well as learning about addition and subtraction. Measurement will also be a focus this term. Please help your child to count to 100 and beyond. Why not count in 2s, 5s or 10s?
Science
This half term the children will be learning about ‘Ourselves’. They will be naming various parts of the body and learning about the senses (touch, taste, smell, hearing and sight).
RE
We will be learning about our own identities, listening to each other’s views and sharing.
Topic
This half term we will be learning about ‘Myself and My Family’. Please talk to your children about family members and their ages.
Computing
The children will be creating an eBook.
PE
Children will be experiencing a variety of multi-skills activities which involve outdoor games. Your child will also be learning about folk dancing. It is important that your child has their PE kit in school every day.
Thank you for your continuing support.
Regards.
